Nigeria: Labor union threatens to strike and protest nationwide from Aug. 21
Nigeria Labour Congress threatens to strike and protest nationwide from 00:01 Aug. 21. Related protests possible.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to strike and protest nationwide from 00:01 Aug. 21. Union representatives announced on Aug. 20 that the mobilization would begin in the event of the arrest of NLC leader Joe Ajaero, summoned to a police interview over criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime offenses. It is unclear whether Ajaero will attend the interview scheduled for Aug. 20.
Should the strike go ahead, disruptions to various sectors (air, road, and maritime transport, utilities, government services, business operations, and healthcare services, among others) are possible. Likely protest locations include along main roads, near government buildings in main urban centers, and at transport hubs, including airports. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive, block traffic, or ignore police orders to disperse.
Confirm all appointments and travel arrangements, including flights, if the strike proceeds from Aug. 21. Allow extra time for travel. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize; if crowds form or violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately. Do attempt to cross a roadblock. Heed instructions from security services. Reconfirm business appointments.
