Norway: Environmental activists plan demonstrations in Stavanger Aug. 22-29
Environmental activists plan climate demonstrations in Stavanger, Norway, Aug. 22-29; increased security, disruptions likely.
Environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) plans to demonstrate in Stavanger Aug. 22-29. The planned action coincides with the Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) 2024 trade show, which occurs in Stavanger Aug. 26-29. Protesters will denounce fossil fuel investment and demand increased government action on climate change. Organizers have announced a series of demonstrations and other events, as well as the construction of a protest camp. The exact details remain unclear, as is participation; several hundred people could attend.
Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor the events; localized road travel and transport disruptions are likely. The protests are likely to pass off peacefully as XR advocates for nonviolent forms of protest. Nonetheless, low-level confrontations cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the protest areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near to the rally sites. Heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
