UK: Police operation ongoing in central Manchester Aug. 8

Emergency services are responding to incidents near 53 Portland Street and Piccadilly Gardens Station in Manchester as of afternoon Aug. 8. The nature of the incidents was not immediately clear; however, authorities report that they were investigating a non-corrosive substance being thrown on Portland Street. Armed officers and multiple emergency vehicles were reported in the affected area of Portland street, as well as near Piccadilly Gardens. Police have cordoned off part of the affected areas, and road traffic on Portland Street is partially obstructed.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions will likely continue in the coming hours or until authorities complete their operations in the area. Tram disruptions are possible at Piccadilly Gardens Station.
