UK: Protesters clash with police in Londonderry on Aug. 10. Increased security and disruptions are likely over the coming hours
Tight security, disruptions likely in the coming hours after protesters clash with police near Bishop Street in Londonderry, UK, Aug. 10.
Protesters in the Nailors Row area of Londonderry clashed with police late Aug. 10. According to authorities, the demonstrators have thrown Molotov cocktails, fireworks, and stones at police. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has deployed to the area in response, and a continued PSNI operation, as well as localized transport disruptions, are likely through the early morning hours of Aug. 11.
Avoid the area until police give the all-clear. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
The protests are largely being carried out by nationalist youth following an annual parade by the Apprentice Boys of Derry, a Protestant fraternal organization. The parade marks the anniversary of a 17th-century battle between largely Catholic and largely Protestant forces and has frequently been met with clashes between nationalists and unionists.
