Activists to protest at Syntagma Square from 12:00 and Eleftherias Park from 14:00 in Athens, Greece, Dec. 21. Heightened security likely.
Multiple activist groups plan to hold protests in central Athens Dec. 21. Activists plan to protest at Syntagma Square from 12:00 and Eleftherias Park from 14:00. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce alleged Western culpability in or attempts to benefit from the collapse of the Syrian government, express solidarity with the Palestinian people, and decry Greek migrant policies. It was not immediately clear how many participants may attend the gatherings.
Police will likely deploy near both protest sites to facilitate the demonstrations. The presence of demonstrators and law enforcement officers will likely disrupt vehicular transport in the area, particularly near Syntagma Square. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near either protest site. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
