India: Activists likely to stage additional protests in Belgaum through at least late December
Further rallies likely in Belgaum, India, through at least late December following recent protest activities. Increased security likely.
Activists will likely continue staging sporadic demonstrations in Belgaum through at least late December following some recent protest activities. On Dec. 10, members of the Lingayat Panchamasali community gathered near the Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) to demand increased reservation in government jobs and educational institutions. Clashes erupted when protesters attempted to break through the security cordon to march toward and surround (gherao) the government building, as officials dispersed the crowds with baton charges.
Reports indicate that authorities have detained several Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Additionally, members of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) party gathered near the Maharashtra border to attend the annual Marathi Sammelan conference. Both gatherings coincided with the beginning of the winter session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, which will last from Dec. 9-19. A winter session is an annual period when the state government convenes to discuss and pass legislation.
Additional gatherings of varying types are likely in the coming days. Potential gathering sites include prominent government buildings such as the Legislative Assembly, public squares, and thoroughfares. Participation will likely vary by location and sponsoring entity. As a precaution, authorities will likely monitor any such gatherings and impose security restrictions depending on operational needs. Further clashes between police, activists, and members of opposing groups cannot be ruled out. Disruptions to local businesses and transportation services are likely.
As a precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Keep away from locations where security personnel appear to be deploying, and leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for potential localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
