Student demonstrators protest in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, Dec. 11; heightened security, transport disruptions likely.
Student activists from the Normalista labor movement launched a protest in Morelia, Michoacan State, on Dec. 11. The purpose of the action is to denounce proposed 2025 guidelines for the System Unit for the Career of Teachers (Unidad del Sistema para la Carrera de las Maestras y los Maestros, Usicamm). Initially, protesters gathered at the intersection of Perferico Paseo de la Republica and Avenida Siervo de la Nacion, reportedly blocking traffic, in addition to vandalizing and carjacking. Protesters then marched to the Xangari area to once again block traffic. Some reports indicate they could march to Casa Michoacan and the Centro Historico.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security near affected areas to prevent further violence. Transport disruptions will likely affect areas subject to protest activity and increased security. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the action as a precaution. Allow extra time to travel if operating in Morelia. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any transport disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
