Netherlands: Climate activists plan to demonstrate at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Dec. 14
Climate activists to protest at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Netherlands, 12:00-15:00 Dec. 14; authorities issue related emergency ordinance.
Environmental activists affiliated with Extinction Rebellion (XR) and Greenpeace reportedly plan to protest in the vicinity of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) 12:00-15:00 Dec. 14. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce AMS as well as KLM Royal Dutch Airlines' (KL) Flying Blue loyalty program. Protest organizers have estimated that around 100 people will participate in the demonstration. In response to the planned protest and to maintain public order, municipal authorities have issued an emergency ordinance prohibiting the demonstrators from coming within 2 meters (7 feet) of the ditches and fences around AMS and engaging in other disruptive actions in the area through 23:59 Dec. 14.
Despite the emergency ordinance, participating activists will probably attempt to disrupt operations at AMS. Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence in the vicinity of the airport to monitor the demonstration and may close some local roads. Security personnel will likely arrest activists perceived to be overly disruptive or in violation of the abovementioned ordinance. Associated transport disruptions, including road traffic disruptions and flight delays and cancellations, cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the protest as a precaution. Reconfirm planned flights and allow additional time for travel via AMS. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
