Spain: Airport workers striking at Madrid-Barajas Airport through at least Dec. 14
Unionized aircraft handling staff striking at Madrid-Barajas Airport, Spain, through Dec. 14. Flight disruptions likely.
Unionized aircraft handling personnel affiliated with the Federation of Services, Mobility, and Consumption (FeSMC-UGT) union are striking at Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) through at least Dec. 14. Union officials warn that the labor action will occur daily from 07:00 to 23:59 and may impact between 1,500 and 2,000 flights. The purpose of the work stoppage is to demand improved labor rights and increased wages. Significant disruptions were not reported as of late Dec. 10.
Organizers allege that the labor action could result in up to 40 percent of flights at MAD being canceled; however, minimum service requirements will likely ensure that cancellations take place. Arrival and departure delays are likely. Picket protests are possible; police will likely deploy to facilitate any demonstrations that take shape.
Reconfirm planned air travel via MAD. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Allow additional time for flights arriving or departing via MAD. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution.
