Unionized public sector employees strike and plan protests in Madrid on Dec. 11. Members of multiple unions, including CCOO, UGT, ANPE, Adide, USIE, UFP, SUP, Acaip, and SIAT, will demand improved healthcare insurance. Protestors will gather at 10:30 at the headquarters of the insurance association UNESPA, and then at 17:00 at the headquarters of Muface, the public sector mutual association. Additional demonstrations are likely at UNESPA and Muface headquarters in regional capitals across Spain. It is possible that several hundred to thousands of protestors will take part in the larger events.
Reconfirm appointments at public sector offices. Authorities will likely deploy additional police to monitor and facilitate the demonstrations. Increased security, road closures, and pedestrian congestion may prompt localized disruptions. The protests will likely pass off peacefully.
Avoid the protests as a standard security procedure. Allow additional time for travel in central Madrid Dec. 11. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
