Monaco: Grand Prix May 25-28

Heightened security measures and increased transportation disruptions are expected during the Monaco Grand Prix May 25-28

Warning

Event

The Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix 2017 (Monaco GP) will take place on Sunday, May 28, in the area of Monaco's central ward La Condamine beginning at 13:00 (local time). Practice sessions will take place Thursday, May 25, at 09:00 and 13:00 and at 10:00 on Saturday, May 27, after which the qualifying round will begin at 13:00. There will be a heavy security presence in the area of the racetrack and throughout the city, which may be increased given the May 22 terrorist attack in Manchester, England. Severe transportation disruptions throughout the city should be expected.

Context

First run in 1929, the Monaco GP is a hugely popular racing and social event, drawing hundreds of thousands in attendance every year.

In May 2016, the United States Department of State issued a travel alert warning that "large scale sporting events and public gathering places throughout Europe" were potential targets for terrorist attacks. On Tuesday, May 23, Prime Minister Theresa May raised the terror threat level in the United Kingdom from "severe" to "critical," indicating a belief that an attack may be imminent. The threat level was increased following the bombing at a concert at Manchester Arena on the night of Monday, May 22. The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack that killed at least 22 and injured 59 more.

Advice

Individuals present in Monaco are advised to expect heightened security measures and transportation delays across the city due to an influx of spectators. Remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or behavior to authorities.
