Kenya: University students protest in Nairobi

University students protest lecturers’ strike in Nairobi April 4; lecturers ordered to resume work April 9; further protests possible

Warning

Event

On Wednesday, March 4, university students protested in Nairobi against the ongoing month-long lecturers’ strike. Students accused the Ministry of Education of failing to adequately address the crisis. The protests were prompted by a warning issued by lecturers that students at public universities should prepare to go without classes for more than a year as negotiations with the government over salary have stalled. On Friday, April 6, the courts ordered lecturers to resume work on Monday, April 9, declaring the strike unprotected and leaving striking lecturers vulnerable to firings. Even so, lecturers have vowed to continue their demonstration until the government offers a proposal to address their salary grievances. Further protests are possible if negotiations are not resumed.

Advice

Individuals in Kenya, particularly in Nairobi, are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution and to keep abreast of the situation.
