Honduras: Ongoing drought in Choluteca

The southern department of Choluteca and surrounding areas are suffering from a drought that has affected more than 200,000 residents. The local farming sector has been negatively affected, limiting agricultural production and raising the cost of economic activities such as growing sugar cane, which requires large quantities of irrigated water to grow. Complicating the situation is that the nearby Choluteca River has been privately operated for years and the government cannot use its water to alleviate the ongoing drought.
