Denmark: Demonstrations across the country May 1

Event

International Workers' Day protests are set to take place across the country on Tuesday, May 1. A demonstration organized by the Greater Copenhagen Trade Union is set to take place at Faelledparken in the capital Copenhagen between noon and 19:00 (local time); some 50,000 individuals are expected to participate. Another gathering; by the Anti-Fascism Youth group; will take place in the capital at Kongens Nytrov; 100 to 300 people are expected to participate. A third demonstration will take place in Copenhagen, organized by For Freedom, at the Radhuspladsen at 14:00; 20 to 50 individuals are expected to attend.

A march organized by the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions and the Confederation of Professionals in Denmark will take place in Aarhus, Denmark's second-biggest city, between noon and 18:00; demonstrators will march from the Radhuspladsen to the Tangkrogen. Around 20,000 individuals are expected. The events will likely remain peaceful but an increased security presence should be anticipated; localized transportation disruptions are possible.

Context

International Workers' Day, also called Labor Day or May Day, is celebrated annually in countries around the world. It is closely associated with international labor, socialist, communist, and anarchist movements. Violent demonstrations and protests, particularly those connected to anarchist groups, are not uncommon; however, the risk is low in Denmark.
