Central America: Heavy rain through June 15

Event

A low pressure system located off the eastern coast of Central America is expected to bring heavy rain and stormy conditions to parts of Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico (Yucatán Peninsula) through at least Friday, June 15. According to the US-based National Hurricane Center, the system is not currently expected to form into a cyclone. Flooding and landslides, as well as associated transportation disruptions and power outages, are possible.

Context

Heavy rain is common in the region during the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which extends from June 1 to November 30, with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October.

In the event of flooding, keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
