Indonesia: Asia Games in Jakarta and Palembang Aug. 18-Sep. 2

Jakarta and Palembang will host the Asia Games 2018 from August 18 through September 2; heighted security and crowded conditions expected

Warning

Event

The 2018 Asia Games will be held in Jakarta and Palembang (South Sumatra) from August 18 through September 2. Preparations for the games are ongoing as of late June, with stadiums being built or renovated along with infrastructure and public transportation systems. Transportation disruptions are likely in the weeks leading up to the games due to construction. Crowded conditions and accommodation shortages are also likely during the events. Heightened security measures, such as increased personnel deployments and road closures, should also be expected in Jakarta in Palembang due to the threat of terrorist organizations throughout the country.

Context

This will be the 18th Asia Games held since it was first started in 1951. Around 15,000 athletes and delegates are expected to participate in the games.

Indonesia has been on high alert for months due to the extant terrorist threat. Islamic State (IS)-inspired groups and lone-wolf assailants have carried out a series of mostly low-level attacks over the past few years. There are fears that such entities could step up attacks following the return of hundreds of Indonesians who had gone to Syria to fight with IS, following the group's recent territorial losses in the region.

Advice

Individuals in Indonesia are advised to keep abreast of the situation, to remain vigilant, and to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments. Allow additional time to travel and expect crowded transportation conditions during the games.

According to various Western intelligence security assessments, the threat of terrorism poses a significant security risk to individuals in Indonesia. Terrorist groups continue to plan attacks and have the capacity and intent to carry out such attacks throughout the country. Past attacks have included suicide bombings and shootings targeting public and crowded places.
