Costa Rica: Indefinite national general strike ongoing

Event

A national general strike launched on Monday, September 10, to denounce fiscal reforms proposed by the government is expected to continue indefinitely. The unions behind the action have said they will continue to strike until at least Friday, September 14, and have threatened to "paralyze" the country. Protests and blockades are likely on roads and highways throughout Costa Rica, notably in and around the capital San José (e.g. in the vicinity of the National Assembly building). Hospitals, government services, schools, garbage collection, taxis, and banks could all be affected, among other sectors. However, public transportation and operations at airports and seaports do not appear to be disrupted for the moment.

The government has threatened to declare the strike illegal, which could increase the risk of clashes between protesters and security forces, notably at roadblocks.

Context 

The strike has been called to protests proposed tax reforms, which would include the introduction of a value added tax as well as taxes on services.
