According to reports, at least 14 people were killed, with at least 188 more suffering injuries, after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the northwest coast of Haiti, approximately 20 km (12.5 mi) west-northwest of Port-de-Paix (Nord Ouest department) at 20:11 (local time) on Saturday, October 6. Minor damages to buildings and infrastructure were reported in Port-de-Paix. Transportation disruptions are possible in the area in the coming days as recovery efforts continue. A minor 5.2-magnitude aftershock was reported 16 km (10 mi) northwest of Port-de-Paix at approximately 16:00 on Sunday, October 7. Further, more powerful aftershocks cannot be ruled out.Context
Earthquakes are relatively common in Haiti, which sits along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone. The country is still recovering from a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in 2010.
