Violent student protest in Conakry October 22 to denounce teachers strike; avoid all protests

Students protested in the capital Conakry on Monday, October 22, to demand the resumption of classes suspended since October 3, due to an ongoing nationwide teacher strike. Clashes between security forces and angry students occurred in the Kipé, Koloma, and Kaloum districts of the capital. Security forces eventually managed to disperse the crowds using tear gas. At least seven people were arrested. Further such protests are likely as long as the situation remains unresolved.

Context

Numerous similar teacher strikes and related violent student protests have been held in Guinea in 2017-2018. Teachers are demanding higher salaries, which the government has refused to accept.
