Warning

Event

Storm Norma is forecast to affect Lebanon through Thursday, January 10, bringing high winds, heavy rain, and snowfall (in higher elevations). High winds and heavy rainfall downed trees and power lines in the Sidon area on Sunday, January 6. Heavy rainfall reportedly caused flooding and rockslides in Batroun, while authorities rescued six people trapped in heavy snow in the Hermel area. Roads were closed on Sunday in Faraiya, Aayoun El Siman, and Koura, among other areas. The storm has also caused material damages in Miniyeh.

Flooding, snowfall (in higher elevations), and associated landslides, transportation disruptions, and power outages are to be expected in Lebanon over the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in Lebanon are advised to monitor local weather forecasts, prepare for transportation disruptions (including flight delays and cancelations, as well as road closures), budget extra time to reach their destinations, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
