Bangladesh: Water transport workers launch indefinite strike April 16

The Bangladesh Water Transport Workers’ Federation (BWTWF), Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation (BNSF), and Launch Labour Association, among other unions, launched an indefinite strike on Tuesday, April 16, causing significant disruptions to water transportation services. According to media sources, the strike started just after midnight on the morning (local time) of Tuesday. Hundreds of travelers were reportedly stranded at the southern Barisal port after services were stopped on 18 routes. All types of passenger and goods-related vessels at the Sadarghat, Khulna, and Monga ports also ceased operations Tuesday morning. Union leaders have vowed to continue the strike until their demand are addressed. Associated transportation and commercial disruptions are expected to continue through Wednesday, April 17, and over the coming days. Related protests are also possible at ports throughout the country.

Context

Water transport workers decided to strike following failed negotiations with the Shipping Ministry on the night of Monday, April 15. The unions have issued an 11-point list of demands, including taking action against terrorism and extortion, stopping harassment against workers, fully implementing the 2016 pay scale, and providing increased compensation for injured workers.
