Warning

Event

Workers of Bangladesh state-owned jute mills, particularly in Khulna and Dhaka divisions, will begin an indefinite strike on Tuesday, May 14, with associated protest actions expected during the strike period. Protests are also likely in the days before the announced strike. Protesters announced that the strike will be accompanied by daily road and railway blockades from 16:00 to 19:00 (local time), resulting in significant transportation disruptions. A heightened security presence is possible around all protest events and clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out; commercial disruptions are also possible.

Context

Jute mill workers have been staging protests, strikes, and blockades in recent months to protest late payment of wages and calling for increased job security. Around 50,000 people participated in protests in March.

Advice

Individuals in Bangladesh, particularly in Khulna and Dhaka divisions, are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate significant transportation disruptions, and avoid all public gatherings and protests as a precaution.
