Peru: 8.0-magnitude earthquake recorded in northern Peru May 26

US Geological Survey (USGS) reported an 8.0-magnitude earthquake in northern Peru's Loreto region at 02:41 (local time) on Sunday, May 26. The quake was located 145 km (90 mi) northeast of Tarapoto (San Martín region) at a depth of 110 km (62 mi). Initial USGS reports indicate possibility of soil liquification in the areas affected by the quake. Power outages were reported in cities in the Amazon basin. No details regarding casualties or damage are available as of 05:00. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.
