The country has been experiencing protests, particularly in the capital Nouakchott, due to allegations of election fraud. Further demonstrations and a heightened security presence are possible in the coming days. Security operations and violence between protesters or opposition groups and security forces are possible.

Context

Mauritania held presidential elections on Saturday, June 22. The ruling party claimed victory with 52 percent of the vote for candidate Mohamed Ould El Gazouani. Opposition groups have denounced the results and alleged electoral fraud.
