A 6.3-magnitude offshore earthquake struck some 56 km (34 mi) east of Lakatoro (Malekula) early (local time) on Thursday, August 1. The quake was recorded at a depth of 179 km (111 mi). No tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat was immediately issued by the US Tsunami Warning System.
Aftershocks are possible in the affected region over the coming hours and days.
