Vietnam: Tropical Depression Kajiki causes flooding September 4

Tropical Depression Kajiki continues to impact north-central Vietnam on Wednesday, September 4, as it moves east towards China. Torrential rains from the storm have hit Vietnam since Sunday, September 1, causing flooding and landslides in some area. Some of the hardest hit areas including Hà Tĩnh and Vinh, which reportedly received 15-30 cm (6-12 in) of rainfall between Sunday and Tuesday, September 3. Vietnam’s National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) has issued heavy rain warnings from Nghệ An to Quảng Ngãi and the Central Highlands through Thursday, September 5. Additional rainfall between 5-10 cm (2-4 in) are possible on September 4, with up to 15 cm (6 in) in isolated areas. Flash floods and landslides are also possible in low-lying provinces from Thanh Hóa to Quảng Ngãi. Associated transportation and business disruptions are anticipated in the event of localized flooding or landslides. 

As of 04:00 on Wednesday, Kajiki is located at approximately 17.0°N 109.7°E (map here) with maximum sustained winds of 46 kph (29 mph). The storm is expected to dissipate as it continues to move northeast past southern China.

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
