As of Wednesday, September 11, hazy conditions (dust, smoke, and vapor) have reduced visibility and have created health hazards in the Malaysian peninsula, including in Singapore, due to ongoing large-scale forest and agricultural fires in Sumatra Island (Indonesia). Air quality in Singapore has, however, maintained moderate haze situation, despite an Air Pollution Index of 112 reported in some part of the city in the afternoon (local time) on Wednesday.
The ASEAN Specialized Meteorological Center (ASMC) has forecasted the situation to worsen over the coming days due to winds blowing from the south towards the Malaysian Peninsula.
Context
The Malaysian peninsula, including Singapore, frequently experiences air pollution (haze) caused by forest fires in Indonesia between June to October.
An API reading of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 moderate, and 101-200 unhealthy.
