Bangladesh: Student protest in Dhaka called off October 18 /update 1
Students call off protest planned in Dhaka on October 18; further rallies possible
Event
Students from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have called off a protest originally set to take place in Dhaka on Friday, October 18. The decision follows progress made by authorities in the ongoing investigation on the killing of a student from the university. Organizers have, however, vowed not to take part in any academic activities until the students suspected of the killing are expelled.
Related protests are possible in the near term in Dhaka. A heightened security presence along with localized transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any protest.
Context
The protest was aimed at denouncing the killing of a BUET student who was beaten to death by leaders of the ''Chhatra League'' students' political association, on October 7. On October 13, police forces prevented a similar rally to take place.
Advice
Individuals in Dhaka are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations, anticipate a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions in the event of a protest, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
