Burundi: Military confirms attack on soldiers near Mabayi November 19

Military officials confirm on November 19 that at least eight soldiers were killed near the Rwandan border by unidentified gunmen on November 16

On Tuesday, November 19, Burundian military officials reported that unidentified gunmen assaulted an army position on Mount Twinyoni east of Mabayi (Cibitoke province) on the night (local time) of Saturday, November 16. According to initial reports, at least eight soldiers were killed and dozens remain missing as of Tuesday. Military sources claim that the attackers crossed from Rwanda and surprised the soldiers before withdrawing across the border. No group immediately claims responsibility for the attack.

A heightened security presence is expected in the region and similar operations are possible in the near term.
