Bangladesh: Red alert issued as cyclone forms in Bay of Bengal May 16

On Saturday, May 16, the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS) issued a red alert (the highest level possible) for a tropical cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal. The storm, currently named Cyclone One, is expected to turn into a cyclonic storm by Saturday evening (local time) when it will receive the name Cyclone Amphan. It is currently forecast to make landfall in Bangladesh between Tuesday, May 19, and Wednesday, May 20, where it is likely to bring a significant storm surge, heavy rainfall, and strong winds, with associated flooding. Northeastern India, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Myanmar are also expected to be affected.

Associated flooding and disruptions to transportation, business, power, and telecommunications are to be anticipated across the country in the coming days.
