Mexico: Tropical Storm Hernan to make landfall in southern Baja California Sur state on August 28

Event

Mexican authorities have issued flood warnings ahead of Tropical Storm Hernan's forecast landfall north of Cabo San Lucas (Baja California Sur state) on the evening of Friday, August 28. 

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Hurricane Center (NHC) as of its 0300 (local time) advisory reports the storm immediately off the coast of Mazatlan moving northwest at 14 mph (23 kph) with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (64 kph). Emergency shelters have been opened in multiple areas of the state as heavy rainfall is expected to cause landslides and disrupt power to thousands of people in the storm's path. Regiments from the Mexican Army have been activated to assist in rescue and recovery efforts. 

Some further strengthening of the storm is possible throughout the day. Heavy rainfall and associated flooding are possible over the coming days, along with evacuations and associated disruptions to business and transport.

Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the storm system are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
