Ghana: Protests near electoral facilities in Accra, Dec. 9

Activists and supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) political party have reportedly gathered in central Accra, including at the Electoral Commission's headquarters and at the International Conference Centre, Dec. 9. The conference facility is being used by the Electoral Commission in the tabulation of Ghana's Dec. 7 elections. It is currently unclear why activists have gathered but it is likely that the group is calling for the announcement of president John Mahama as the victor of the election. The Electoral Commission is yet to declare a winner.

An increased security presence is likely in central Accra through at least evening hours. Further protests and associated gatherings are likely in the coming hours as election-related processes continue. Transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all events. Clashes between rival parties and security forces are possible.
