Protests condemning a police-involved killing will likely continue in Tirana, as well as in other major cities, including Shkodra and Durres, through at least Dec. 20. Activists have been protesting the killing of a Tirana resident by security forces on Dec. 8. Demonstrations have been occurring in front of the Ministry of Interior Headquarters and the Albanian Government building in Tirana every night since Dec. 9. Additionally, several demonstrations have occurred in the city centers of Durres and Shkodra. In several instances, police have employed riot-control tactics, including tear gas and baton charges to disperse unruly demonstrators. Reports indicate that as many as 25 police officers and at least four demonstrators have been injured in ongoing clashes; several dozen demonstrators have been arrested.
Authorities will almost certainly heighten security during any demonstrations. Current coronavirus disease (COVID-19) measures in Albania severely restrict public gatherings; police may attempt to shut down demonstrations that breach these restrictions Localized transport and business disruptions are likely, especially at any protests with a large attendance. Clashes between police and gathering participants are possible.
