CAR: Armed groups conduct attacks in Bouar and Grimari Jan. 7-9

Event

Armed groups have conducted multiple attacks in Bouar, the capital of Nana-Mambere prefecture, since Jan. 7. The most recent attack Jan. 9 saw armed groups attempting to overrun a military base used by the Central African Armed Forces (FACA) according to local media reports. Armed clashes have also conducted repeated attacks on Grimari, in the Ouaka prefecture, according to reports Jan. 9. Local media reports indicate that United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and CAR security forces retain control of both towns despite incursions by armed groups.

Heightened security measures are almost certain in these towns in the coming days. Further rebel attacks are possible elsewhere in the Nana-Mambere, and Ouaka prefectures in the coming days.

Context

Post-election insecurity, including related opposition unrest, is likely to persist through January following the legislative and presidential elections Dec. 27, which incumbent President Faustin-Archange Touadera won. Touadera announced an indefinite nationwide 2000-0500 nightly curfew Jan. 7 amid increased militia activity linked to post-election political tensions. Militia groups continue to conduct attacks on government forces nationwide as rival armed factions, including the Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC) rebel coalition, attempt to pressure the government and derail the political process. Recurrent attacks since mid-December have been reported in the Mbomou, Ouham-Pende, Ouaka, Lobaye, and Ombella-M'poko prefectures.
