On Jan. 21, the US Embassy in Djibouti issued a security alert following an attack on the Gendarmerie Brigade Office in Tadjoura Jan. 14. The assailants were not identified and no group has formally claimed responsibility for the attack. The embassy did not disclose sources or confirm the number of casualties. No other diplomatic missions in Djibouti have issued similar alerts.

Context

The US Embassy warning comes ahead of the April presidential elections. Similar isolated incidents have occurred in the previous pre-election cycles, however, it remains unclear whether the incident represents a politically motivated attack.
