Further communal violence possible in Abongoua, Arrah Department, Cote d'Ivoire, following clashes Feb. 8-9. Heightened security likely.

Warning

Event

Further communal violence is possible in Abongoua, Arrah Department, in the coming days following reports of clashes between members of the ethnic Agni and Malinke Feb. 8-9. Tensions between the groups escalated after local officials recently ordered the relocation of a market. A quarrel between several members Feb. 8 erupted into violence and prompted the burning of several homes and shops. Authorities have yet to confirm any reports of casualties.

Heightened security is likely to continue in the coming day; officials have deployed additional security personnel to the affected area as a precaution. Localized business and transport disruptions are possible, particularly if further clashes occur.

Abongoua is around 131 km (81 miles) east-southeast of Yamoussoukro.

Context

Cote d'Ivoire has long struggled with bouts of communal violence, and authorities' efforts to halt such flareups have been mostly ineffectual. The most recent communal violence between the ethnic Agni and Malinke occurred in November following the presidential election; violence broke out between the rival groups that supported opposing political sides in the contest. Deep-rooted tensions between the communities remain following the victory of President Alassane Ouattara.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in the affected area. Plan for possible disruptions due to increased security measures and possible clashes. Heed the advice of security officials.
