Congo: Presidential elections nationwide March 21; internet disruptions reported /update 1
Congo holding presidential election March 21. Internet disruptions reported nationwide. Increased security is likely.
Event
The Republic of Congo is holding a presidential election March 21. The internet has reportedly been discontinued across the country on voting day. It is not clear how long the suspension will last. Vehicular traffic is also reportedly suspended, and international borders are closed through 18:00 March 21. There have been no reports of insecurity or unrest as of the morning of March 21; however, security forces are likely to maintain a heightened presence nationwide for the duration of the vote. President Denis Sassou Nguesso will be contending for a fourth consecutive term in office, with several other opposition candidates confirmed to participate.
Heightened security is likely through March 21 and may persist following the vote. Protests either in support of the eventual winner or in opposition to the voting process or its outcome are possible in the days following the election. Should protests materialize, the threat of violence is elevated. Ground travel disruptions near protest sites are likely. Officials may also seek to contain unrest by suspending telecommunications and imposing movement restrictions.
Advice
Avoid any election events, and exercise caution near election committee offices, party offices, and polling stations. Reconfirm all public transport services. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-governmental building. Always carry valid travel documents and heed authorities' instructions; maintain a non-confrontational stance if stopped by officials for checks.
