China: Dust storms forecast to continue in parts of northern China through at least March 28 /update 5
Strong winds to continue producing dust storms across parts of northern China through at least March 28. Transport disruptions possible.
Event
Additional dust storms are forecast in parts of northern China through at least March 28. Chinese authorities have warned that dust storms could occur in the southern Xinjiang basin, along with parts of western Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, and Shaanxi, through March 26. Sandstorms are forecast to spread eastward, potentially impacting areas of southern and eastern Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanxi, Liaoning, and northern Shandong March 26-28. Authorities in Mongolia have also warned of potential dust storms in southern parts of the country.
Dust storms can reduce visibility, leading to transport disruptions. Hazardous driving conditions are possible and could result in traffic congestion and an increase in vehicle accidents. Flight delays, diversions, and cancellations are possible at regional airports, including those serving Beijing (PEK, PKX, NAY) and Tianjin (TSN), during periods of severe dust storm activity. Ground transport disruptions are typically severe during rush-hour periods. Higher-than-normal employee absenteeism is possible in the event of widespread transport disruptions.
Hazardous conditions may prompt school or business closures. Officials could limit activity in industries that emit air pollution, especially construction and power generation. Dust storms can also pose a health risk to individuals with pulmonary or respiratory issues, and authorities usually warn persons at high-risk to remain indoors with windows closed during dust storms. Residual business and transport disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve.
Advice
Monitor local media for updates and related weather advisories. Exercise caution while driving and allow additional time to reach destinations. Confirm flights before checking out of hotels or returning rental cars. Plan for possible delivery delays. If operating in areas affected by dust storm activity, consider remaining indoors when possible. Individuals who must be outdoors should use facemasks and observe other precautions to avoid dust inhalation.
