Philippines: Militants reportedly clashing with the military in Datu Paglas, Maguindanao Province, May 8
Militants attack Datu Paglas in Maguindanao Province, Philippines, early May 8. Additional fighting likely. Plan for disruptions.
Event
Reports indicate that more than 100 Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) members attacked Datu Paglas the morning of May 8. Some reports suggest that a smaller number of militants entered the area searching for food after days of clashes with the military. The militants reportedly stormed the center of the town and occupied Datu Paglas market. There are no immediate reports of civilian casualties, but security personnel evacuated nearby residents. Local officials claimed there is no broader threat to the public.
A security cordon is in place, and the military is carrying out clearing operations in the vicinity. Armed clashes remain possible in the town center while the operation continues. Localized business and transport disruptions are almost certain nearby. Officials have closed National Highway 76 between Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat Province, and Tulunan, Cotabato Province. Many motorists are stranded, and lingering congestion is likely until security personnel issue the all-clear. Authorities will likely maintain an increased security presence in Datu Paglas in the coming days. Clashes between BIFF militants and the military remain possible in areas outside of the town.
Datu Paglas is approximately 88 km (55 miles) southeast of Cotabato City and 75 km (46 miles) north-northwest of General Santos City.
Advice
If operating in affected areas of Datu Paglas, follow all security personnel instructions, especially evacuation orders. If not ordered to evacuate, shelter in place and remain away from windows until the operation concludes. Delay non-urgent movement. If possible, avoid travel to Datu Paglas until authorities give the all-clear. Use alternative routes to avoid National Highway 76; allow additional time for ground shipments and vehicular transport through at least May 8. Confirm route conditions before traveling through the area in the coming days due to the potential for further clashes near the town.
