Afghanistan: Fire at a market in Kabul, May 8

Event

A large fire has been reported at or near the Shaheen Market in the Macroryan-e-Char area of Kabul, the afternoon May 8. The cause of the fire is not clear. There have been no reports of casualties.

Increased security, as well as localized transport and business disruptions, are likely near the incident site. Authorities could evacuate nearby buildings as a precaution. Lingering disruptions are possible after crews extinguish the fire as investigations and recovery operations continue.

Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the incident site. Allow additional time to reach destinations in the affected area through at least the evening of May 8. Consider remaining indoors if affected by heavy smoke, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water. Heed all official instructions including evacuation notices.
