Event

Activists under the World Wide Rally for Freedom banner plan to protest in at least three locations in South Africa May 15. The events, called to oppose global COVID-19 restrictions, will be held in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg; gatherings in other locations are also possible. The following events have been confirmed:

  • Cape Town: Participants will gather on Hanover Street from 10:00.

  • Durban: Participants will meet at the Blue Gazebo on South Beach from 10:00.

  • Johannesburg: Participants plan to gather in the vicinity of Witkoppen Road and William Nicol Drive in the Fourways area 08:00-09:00.

Although the demonstrations are likely to be peaceful, security personnel will almost certainly monitor the demonstrations. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all events.

Advice

Exercise caution and avoid all gatherings as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check public transport schedules for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the vicinity of any gatherings.
