Authorities confirmed that at least two people were killed following several grenade attacks in Bujumbura city center at approximately 19:00 May 25. An unspecified number of assailants reportedly threw grenades at various locations, including at a parking lot near the COTEBU market and in the Bwiza neighborhood. Uncorroborated reports suggest that dozens of individuals have been injured due to the blasts and that the death toll is also likely to increase. The motive for the attack remains unclear; however, officials have claimed that the attack had a terrorist motive and that one attacker, injured by his grenade, has been arrested. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
