Activists may attempt to rally at Senado Square in Macau, China, late June 4. Increased security likely, localized disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Activists may attempt to rally at Senado Square in Macau late June 4 to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square. As of May 27, authorities have cited national security and health concerns to ban the planned event, but protesters could still gather at the site in defiance of official restrictions. Demonstrators may also attempt to gather at alternative locations, including near the Macau Government Headquarters. It remains unclear how many participants such events may draw.

Police are highly likely to deploy officers in and around Senado Square on June 4 to prevent activists from gathering. Clashes between police and demonstrators are possible. Security measures and any protest activity could prompt transportation disruptions in nearby areas.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a standard security precaution. Plan for ground transport disruptions in the affected area. Seek updated information on roads in the area and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations.
