Bomb explosion in Zepe near Tehini, Cote d'Ivoire, June 12, kills several soldiers.
Event
An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near a military vehicle near the village of Zepe, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Tehini, June 12. The blast killed three security personnel and wounded four others. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.
Authorities may increase security patrols in the area in the coming days. Further attacks are possible.
Context
There is a heightened terrorism threat in northern Cote d'Ivoire. Militants operating in the wider Sahel region are active in the region and have demonstrated an intent to target the country in the past. Prior to the recent attack, clashes were reported between military forces and militants June 7 in Tougbo. Attacks against the military occurred in Kafolo and Tehini in late March.
