Tanzania: Protests likely nationwide through July following the arrest of opposition leaders in Mwanza city, July 21
Protests likely nationwide through late July following the arrest of opposition leaders in Mwanza city, Tanzania, July 21
Event
Protests are likely across Tanzania through late July after authorities arrested Freeman Mbowe, the leader of the opposition Party for Democracy and Progress, commonly known as Chadema, along with 10 other opposition members on July 21 in Mwanza city. Authorities reportedly took those arrested to the Mwanza Central Police Station, though Mbowe's whereabouts are currently unknown. Police have stated that those arrested were detained on suspicion of inciting an unauthorized assembly. Demonstrations in support of Mbowe are likely to occur in major urban centers, including Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Mbeya, Mtwara, and Pemba and Stone Town in Zanzibar.
Authorities will almost certainly increase security near government buildings, as well as other potential protest locations. Police will likely use significant force to disperse any protests that may materialize; law enforcement could perform pre-emptive arrests of opposition candidates. Government supporters could hold counterdemonstrations; clashes between opposing groups of activists could occur. Ground travel and business disruptions are likely near all protest sites.
Advice
Exercise increased personal vigilance in the coming days. Avoid all demonstrations due to the possibility of violence. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. If clashes break out nearby, take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed all security personnel instructions and allow additional travel time near gatherings. Reconfirm all travel arrangements. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
