Tanzania: Further opposition protests are likely in Dar es Salaam, Aug. 6 and possible nationwide through mid-August /update 2
Opposition Chadema protests are likely in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Aug. 6, and possible protests nationwide through mid-August.
Event
Protests by supporters of the opposition Party for Democracy and Progress (commonly known as Chadema) are likely near the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in Dar es Salaam, Aug. 6, and remain possible nationwide through mid-August. Police arrested several Chadema members near the court building in Dar es Salaam, Aug. 5. They had gathered in support of detained Chadema leader Freeman Mbowe, who was arrested July 21. Authorities charged Mbowe with terrorism-related offenses July 26. Mbowe was due to have a virtual hearing at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court, Aug. 5. The case was postponed to Aug. 6 due to technical issues.
Further protests remain possible in major urban centers, including in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Mbeya, and Mtwara, as well as in Zanzibar's Stone Town and on Pemba Island through mid-August.
Authorities will almost certainly increase security near any protests that materialize. Demonstrators could gather at government buildings, political party offices, or in town centers. Police are likely to forcibly disperse any related demonstrations that may materialize; law enforcement could preemptively arrest opposition candidates. Ground transport and business disruptions are likely near any potential protests.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to the possibility of violence. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. If clashes break out nearby, take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed all security personnel instructions and allow additional travel time near gatherings. Reconfirm all travel arrangements.
