Slovenia: Further demonstrations likely in Ljublijana after violent protest, Sept. 15

Activists likely to stage further protests in Ljublijana, Slovenia, against tighter COVID-19 restrictions following clashes, Sept. 15.

Informational

Event

Further disruptive protests are likely in the coming weeks following violence in central Ljubljana on the evening of Sept. 15 during a demonstration against government COVID-19 restrictions. Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters around the National Assembly building after reportedly being pelted with stones, bottles, and other missiles; several police officers were injured, and several arrests were made. An estimated 8,000 people took part in the demonstration, representing Slovenia’s largest COVID-19-related protest since the pandemic's start.

Slovenia’s recent tightening of COVID-19 restrictions has met with opposition from several civil society groups. Further related protests are likely outside government buildings, including the National Assembly building, and in central squares, such as Congress Square, Preseren Square, and Republic Square. Attendance at such events could reach the low thousands. Large numbers of people and associated security measures would likely prompt localized traffic and public transport disruptions around any demonstrations. Authorities could attempt to disperse demonstrators who become disruptive and isolated clashes between demonstrators and police are possible.

Advice

Exercise caution near potential protest venues and avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution. Heed instructions from authorities and leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before travel. Allow extra time to reach destinations in central Ljubljana during protests.
