China, Kyrgyzstan: Chinese-Kyrgyz border to close Oct. 1-7 /update 1

Chinese-Kyrgyz border checkpoints to close Oct. 1-7; traffic to resume Oct. 8. Transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Chinese officials plan to close the country’s border with Kyrgyzstan Oct. 1-7 as part of measures to safeguard celebrations marking the Oct. 1 anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The Irkeshtam and Torugart border checkpoints will reopen on Oct. 8.

The border closure will likely cause freight transport and delivery disruptions through at least Oct. 8, as freight operators could attempt to divert shipping routes through border checkpoints in neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan or Tajikistan. After the border crossings resume operations, increased traffic congestion is possible along the A371/S309 and A365/S212 highways.

Advice

Allow additional time for travel and consider alternative routes if planning to route freight through Chinese-Kyrgyz border checkpoints Oct. 1-8. Plan for possible freight delivery delays through at least Oct. 8.
