Pro-government rallies ongoing in several cities across Gambella and Oromia regions, Ethiopia, Nov. 5. Avoid all demonstrations.

Warning

Event

Thousands of people are reportedly holding pro-government rallies in the Oromia and Gambella regions Nov. 5. Protests have been reported in Gambella (Gambella Region), Dire Dawa (Oromia), as well as in Adama, Shashemene, Legetafo, Sebeta, Jimma, Dukem, Nekemte (Oromia). The actions are in support of the government and its security forces amid the ongoing conflict between the anti-federal-government Tigray Defense Forces (TDF) and the Ethiopian military (Ethiopian National Defense Force; ENDF), which is supported by regional militias. Demonstrators are reportedly carrying banners denouncing foreign pressure.

Security personnel will almost certainly deploy to monitor the actions. Business and transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all protests. As the rallies are pro-government in nature, widespread violence is not likely, but cannot be discounted entirely.

Further protests, rallies or large celebratory gatherings are possible in response to battlefield developments.

Advice

Individuals currently on nonessential travel in Ethiopia should consider departing the country via commercial options when possible. Those within the country on essential travel should consider deferring travel to Amhara, Afar, and Tigray regions, as well as surrounding areas impacted by fighting, until the situation stabilizes.

Avoid all protests, travel at night, nonessential travel in public, and concentrations of security personnel. Refuel vehicles when safe to do so. Reconfirm all scheduled transport services, including flights, before departure. Carry identification to facilitate passage through checkpoints.
