Uruguay: Various activists to protest in central Montevideo Dec. 9

Various activists, including members of labor unions and social and human rights groups, plan to demonstrate in Montevideo Dec. 9. Protesters plan to meet for a rally in Plaza Libertad (or Plaza Cagancha) from 18:00 and then march to the Legislative Palace where the National Assembly meets. The purpose of the action is to protest a proposed bill to grant older prisoners house arrest. Opponents argue the legislation would benefit those jailed for human rights abuses during the country's 1973-85 military rule. Related demonstrations are possible in other urban centers in Uruguay.

Additional police will almost certainly deploy to monitor any protests that occur. Large crowds and associated security measures will likely prompt localized ground transport disruptions in affected areas of central Montevideo. The action will probably proceed peacefully, though isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons.
